The P2 "Specific Message" Audio Advisory Gear/Stall/Overspeed Alert/Warning Systems

The P2 AAS (Audio Advisory System) is your "Electronic Co-Pilot" which never makes a mistake!  It provides "specific message" overspeed, stall and gear audio advisories directly into your headset, and/or your ships intercom/speaker and offers a new level of reliability and safety definition.

Besides keeping you from joining "Have" sect of the infamous "The Gear Up Club", the P2 system can even quickly pay for itself by tracking your aircrafts flight time vs. tach time saving you $1,000's per year in maintenance costs!

P 2 Inc. offers a well-proven, FAA approved, totally independent Audio Advisory System (AAS) dependent or triggered on a pre-selected specific airspeed (adjustable in 5 mph increments) and airspeed "history" as well as your landing gear position-namely whether it it locked down or not.  It is armed once you take off and reach a pre-designated speed and then is constantly on high alert watching if you lower your gear BEFORE  your airspeed drops below a pre-set speed.  If the gear isn't down, a clear commanding male voice is piped into your intercom/headsets and cabin speaker to tell you to "check gear" as well as VISUAL WARNING through a panel mounted illuminated enunciator (as pictured on left) in plain view on your instrument panel.  Likewise, if you have lowered your gear, the unit informs you verbally that everything is OK by saying, "Gear is down for landing."  In addition, it provides a verbal stall and overspeed audio advisories which we think are a welcome addition to the basic gear warning. The P2 functions by continuously monitoring airspeed and other inputs and converts them into the appropriate message.

The gear warning horn commonly found in most general aviation aircraft (Mooneys included) is usually mechanical and functions relative to throttle position. As the accident statistics clearly point out, that type of warning is often too late. According to an FAA Advisory Circular, over 30% of all landing accidents are still due to the fact that the landing gear was not extended. This type of accident can happen to anyone. It only takes a small distraction (especially if you fly single-pilot), and it's too late!

To put it simply, the P2 Audio Advisory System on the other hand, works off of airspeed. When the plane is slowed down to a preset airspeed threshold, the system will actually inform the pilot whether the "GEAR IS DOWN FOR LANDING" or to "CHECK GEAR!". The airspeed threshold is set up specifically to your make and model of aircraft and is adjustable, up and down, in 5 knot increments.

The AAS also maintains a watch over any excessive airspeed and will annunciate "OVERSPEED!" anytime the speed of the aircraft reaches Vne (red line). This is a handy feature especially when flying in IFR conditions and/or at night. In addition, the AAS provides an output for an optional airspeed activated Hobbs hour meter to keep track of flight (not tach) time. This translates into saving you money. Overhauls can be done based on "time in service", not tach time. Depending on how much taxi time you accumulate, this feature alone can pay for the system in a very short time.

We agree with the airline and military who think this type of specific message verbal audio alarm is damn hard to ignore and equally hard to fool into not sounding at the appropriate time.  That isn't to say that if you approached the runway at 90-100Kts and tried to force it down well above normal touch-down airspeed you couldn't "trick" the P 2, but we find that in all practical situations it is nearly fool-proof.

We like the P 2 system and can highly recommend it.  It isn't  however something the average owner can or should install as it involves breaking into the static system and your avionics wiring harness.  At some $1,395 it is an unbeatable bargain as it is far less than 1/2 of the average insurance accident/incident deductible, AND can easily raise your insurance premiums substantially-if not make it all but impossible to obtain at any price!  Besides that, the average gear-up incident puts your ship down for 3 months (or more).  This unit comes with complete instructions and a competent shop should be able to install the P 2 system in about a day.
