My Personal Perspective:
Often pilots call asking what I really think and if I use these units myself? Well, I have found they work exactly as advertised and yes, as you read this I probably have several hooked up long-term to a motorcycle, boat, and
(if I am not out flying) my Mooney...

Until you have an electrical failure most pilots don't realize how vital it is to keep their battery's capacity up to snuff and most all of us think that as long as our battery can start our aircraft, it is OK. Wrong, Skip Koss from Concorde Aircraft Battery confirms that it only takes some 15-18% of a typical G-35 battery to start the average aircraft engine; amazing. That means, when your charging systems takes time out, you may only have a few precious minutes to both recognize the fact, AND get your ducks in a row as you are about to "hand fly" a crippled partial panel bird while practicing your emergency gear extension skills! Not a fun place to be even under the best of circumstances... This is why we promote these highly effective units.

Like I said in Aviation Consumer's Nov. '00 research article on pulse de-sulfation, at first you could say I was intrigued about the prospects but also highly skeptical. In fact I even resisted reporting on this topic for some time. Then at the persistent urging of one of the pulse technology patent holders himself, we experimented preliminarily with about 10 throw away or "junk" motorcycle batteries (the kind with the translucent case so you can see excessive sulfation as being chalky deposits on plates). To my amazement we were able to "restore" over 1/2 of them back to serviceable life after my friend, a local Honda shop owner reported all his efforts failed. In fact, he laughed when we told him what we were up to. Now however like me, he has became a believer when he saw the results first hand.
Note: Read our White Paper tests for more data on how you can run some simple tests yourself.
I became convinced if by nothing else than the mountain of positive anecdotal results and "after the fact," I decided to help market these units after I saw how effective they were in increasing the useful life and output of batteries as I think keeping your aircraft's battery capacity up to snuff is vital.
Needless to say, yes, I DO USE THEM MYSELF as my family, friends, and neighbors can attest. However, I have found some units are better than others, in fact much better. Our tuned frequency de-sulfation units check-out far better on oscilloscopes, and perform better in the field than the rest of the ones we tested. In my opinion, the tuned pulse de-sulfation units offered here are the best and in two words; "they work..."

MagnaLabs 6, 12, 24, and 36 Volt "Tuned Frequency" Pulse De-Sulfation Units

Dubbed the “Maintainer/Chargers with a Brain” these specially tuned (for G25/35 batteries) aviation grade units produce high frequency pulses causing the sulfuric acid crystals to release or "un-bond", returning to the cell's sulfuric acid electrolyte. With de-sulphated or “clean” plates, the battery will be able to accept a charge and be capable of delivering its full power while having an extended life. The unit's second stage “floats” the battery at full charge state without overcharging it. During the initial "maintenance stage" the battery is automatically being de-sulphated.

When used properly, besides de-sulfating, Bat Pac De-Sulfator's will also maintain batteries at full charge indefinitely, without overcharge like most all other "automatic/float" type trickle chargers. Our Patent Pending PulseMode circuit continually “conditions” (de-sulphates) all GA lead acid batteries, including pure lead, AGM, and gel cell batteries. Our Auto-Float Control ensures batteries will be kept at full charge regardless of condition by providing only the current requested by the battery, never more When used as long-term maintainers these units have never been known to "boil" out the electrolyte like most all other chargers, including most other "automatic or smart" trickle chargers promoted to be safe for long-term use.

Our 110V powered 6, 12, 24 and 36v "tuned frequency"* pulse charger/de-sulfators are long-term "smart" battery maintainers which will work with all aircraft batteries when the aircraft is hangared or at tie-down etc. They use 110V household current and attach to the battery via either the simple alligator clamps or semi-permanent ring terminals(included) via a quick-disconnect pigtail approx. 6'+/- long. These units are somewhat moisture resistant but need protection from direct rain and dew etc., and will work via "light use" extension cord. These units are entirely automatic and are designed to be left connected for extended time periods especially during prolonged inactivity or storage. In fact, they are designed to be left on indefinitely as it is our experience these units will not harm batteries like most other "automatic" trickle chargers. These units sense the exact charging needs and amount of sulfation of the battery, and automatically cycle between "charging", "off", and the "pulse de-sulfation" modes as needed.

It is our experience they do not overcharge any aircraft battery even if left un-attended but to the contrary, extend the life of most infrequently used batteries dramatically.

The de-sulfation process itself generally takes a minimum of 2-4 weeks time (cumulative) initially, but can be disrupted while you use your aircraft for flights etc. For best results the unit should be re-connected again once the aircraft is put back into storage or hangered on a regular basis In general, we recommend a minimum of 2 weeks de-sulfation operation approx. 4 times a year, or (as the manufacturer recommends) you can leave these units connected for months on end in between periods of inactivity.

Pulse De-Sulfation Technology

Aviation Consumer Magazine had this to say about pulse battery De-Sulfation technology: "We were skeptical first, but .... field experience with pulse charging is too intriguing and positive to ignore, in our view."
MOA (Mooney Owners Of America) has done their own research and reported similar findings. In fact, they have picked our line of electronic Pulse De-Sulfators as one of their Year End Top Picks several years running.

"This is the NASA inspired technology (pulse de-sulfation) the U.S. Military has bought into in a big way...Reportedly to the tune of some $80,000,000 purchased by the Army (III Corps) alone...And they say it is saving them millions each year!"
Aviation Consumer Magazine, November 2000 and Mooney Owners Of America, (MOA) November 2001.

Battery Sulfation Is The True Bane Of Nearly Every Lead-Acid Battery*...Especially General Aviation, Marine, Motorcycle, R/V, and Sports/Lawn Equipment, etc. Type Batteries Which Aren't Used Regularly. Battery Plate Sulfation is known to be the major cause of reduced capacity in GA batteries, premature failures, and (in fact) nearly all battery failures! Now, the NASA inspired technology you have been hearing about and perhaps have been reading about in national publications like Aviation Consumer Magazine and Popular Mechanics (just to name a few) is available to us aircraft owners.
*Including gel-cell, recumbent (RGB gas regulated) and all flooded cell batteries

What Do The GA Battery Manufacturers Say?

Teledyne/Gill Battery's Dan Rankin: "Pulse technology has worked in the company's initial testing. More research to implement pulse technology in a (aircraft) -electronic or "smart" batteries -is on the drawing board...."
Aviation Consumer Magazine, November, '00.
Concord Aviation Battery's VP, Skip Koss has also made similar endorsements of pulse de-sulfation technology.

Dubbed the “Maintainer/Chargers with a Brain” these specially tuned (for G25/35 batteries) aviation grade units produce high frequency pulses causing the sulfuric acid crystals to release or "un-bond", returning to the cell’s sulfuric acid electrolyte. They are NOT to be confused with mass merchandiser variety "automatic" or "smart" trickle chargers!

Our Pulse De-Sulfators Are NOT Like Any Others!

Consumer Alert Notice: Don't confuse our patented Pulse De-Sulfatotor/maintainers & chargers for the typical mass merchandise (Wal-Mart/K-Mart) "automatic" trickle chargers. While their units are adequate trickle chargers when used for short periods of time, battery manufacturers tell us even so-called "automatic" chargers can ruin batteries as they tend to boil out battery electrolyte fluids if left un-attended for longer periods.
Remember, if the charger or maintainer doesn't specifically say it uses "Patented Pulse De-Sulfating Technology" it isn't a pulse de-sulfating device...!
